I get very excited talking (and writing) about making DIY-products because I love the fact that I’ve reduced a lot of my household plastic waste, my home is rid of toxic chemicals (almost fully!) AND money is being saved. Moreover, the satisfaction is so EMPOWERING – so many wins all around!

I want to live in a space which is safe to breathe in. Safe for my skin and the clothes I wear. In an ever increasingly polluted environment, the need to create a clean and healthy home hasn’t been so desperate for many of us.

Many, just like me, who are used to buying the commercially available detergents would not have a clue of where to start if someone said to make my own. Before I took a leap of faith (in myself) my biggest concerns were “is it hygienic enough,” “is it clean enough?” YES and so much more. When I made the switch to natural living and natural wellness, my biggest feat was, in fact, switching from chemical and toxic household detergents to my own natural scented ‘potions’.

Here are some go-to DIY Household Cleaning Recipes: read about my experience with some essential oils.

Multi-Purpose Cleaning Product

1 cup white vinegar
1 cup vodka
3 cups water
40 drops Lemon or tea tree (Melaleuca) essential oil (alternatively squeeze half an actual lemon).

If you want to make this without essential oils – simply grab a few lemons and a bottle of vinegar and follow this simple Lemon-Vinegar recipe!

As a Surface Cleaner: Mix all the ingredients together into a spray bottle to use as a surface cleaner around the house and bathroom cleaner.

Floor Detergent: Pour in regular bottles and dilute with water to use as a tile floor cleaner – don’t use this mixture on wooden floors. See below recipe for wooden floors.

This one cleaner can be used to clean the majority of your house.

TIP: Buy a big 5 litre container of white vinegar. It is the best cleaning product you will ever use.
